For the past 37 years, Betty Chinn has been working tirelessly to serve the local homeless population in the Humboldt area. The Betty Chinn Foundation, established in 2012, has been instrumental in the improvement of hundreds of lives through programs available at the Day Center, the Container Village, and the Family Shelter in Eureka.
On Monday, November 26, Betty Chinn was involved in a vehicle accident while driving her Blue Angel food delivery truck. Betty was driving at the intersection of 6th and A Streets in Eureka when her truck was hit by another vehicle. The other driver ran a stop sign, and his vehicle hit Betty's truck on the door of the passenger's side. Her truck was pushed up against a building, the fuel tank emptied gas all over the road. While there were, thankfully, no injuries to either driver or the other driver's passenger, the truck was deemed a total loss.
This is the truck used to provide meals to over 150 homeless individuals per day throughout the county, ranging from as far east as Orleans, as far north as Orick, and as far south as Weott. The Blue Angel truck is also used for food delivery to senior citizens who live alone (currently there are 22), monthly food delivery to families, and delivery of clean clothes and blankets to families and individuals where needed.
With the refrigeration and heating unit necessary to properly and safely store and transport both hot and cold food, the replacement of the vehicle is expected to cost around $50,000. Insurance recovery on the total vehicle is unknown at this time, but will be at fair market value for a 12-year-old high-mileage vehicle. We anticipate the need to raise considerable funds in order to replace the vehicle which is essential to continuation of Betty's ministry. We are therefore looking to the kindness and generosity of our local community to allow the Betty Kwan Chinn Homeless Foundation to carry on its mission.
Thank you in advance for your contribution as we look forward to getting back on the road!

“I believe that Betty is an inspiration to the community. I believe that she is probably as perfect an example of altruism as you can find. I don’t think she has any agenda other than trying to help people out. … It kind of rekindles my faith in the goodness of people and I’m proud to be associated with her.”
