In the fall of 2008, Betty received the Minerva Award from Maria Shriver, then First Lady of California. Along with this award came a cash prize of $25,000, which Betty used to apply towards the cost of building a shower and laundry facility for the homeless. The community rallied behind Betty and her passion for helping the homeless, and helped Betty raise enough money to build a nice quality shower facility for her people to use.
Betty’s determination to build a shower facility started in 2008 when a local homeless man in a wheelchair was too ashamed to come close to her to get some food because he ‘stunk’. He said he would bathe in the bay that night, and asked for some clean clothes. That night the man drowned, and Betty vowed to make it her goal to get a shower facility built.
"I went to the Betty Chinn showers this morning... It was awesome! The people were helpful, smiles on their faces, great experience. After 10 days, it was a Godsend. Thank you and your workers. Bless everyone of you! The homeless are blessed to have you in their lives!"
